Volkswagen’s charging provider subsidiary, Electrify America, is scrambling to complete the first phase of its nationwide charging network.
This is the second in a series of articles that will look at the company’s planned installations in various regions in the state.
First in the series: San Jose area has seven Electrify America sites “coming soon”
Alameda County
Oakland is the county seat of Alameda which runs along the east edge of the San Francisco Bay. Just to the east of Alameda is Contra Costa County which we cover further down in this article.
While Santa Clara County is the origin and center of Silicon Valley, that label is now often extended up to Fremont in southern Alameda County. Fremont is the home of Tesla’s U.S.-based vehicle assembly plant which began making the Model S back in 2012. It now also makes the Model S SUV and Tesla’s newest car, the Model 3.
Electrify America has five sites listed now as “coming soon” in Alameda County and its possible that more will be added to that list later this year.
Lucky Supermarket
247 East 18th Street Oakland, CA 94606
Some initial construction fencing and a porta-potty are on-site but no work has started quite yet although it looks imminent.
Target
2700 5th St, Alameda, CA 94501
I wasn’t able to visit this site due to time constraints. I began construction several months ago and so should be near complete by now (one would hope) but I don’t know. The photo below, taken from PlugShare and dated February 18, 2019, shows the beginning of construction.
Walmart
1919 Davis St, San Leandro, CA 94577
The concrete pad for the charging cabinet hardware has been poured and is visible in the background to the left side of the photo below. To the right side of the photo there are three BTC Power 150 kW charging dispensers. This looks like a “metro”-style location so there is a good chance there will also be a single J1772 AC charging dispenser as well.
Bank of America
3067 Castro Valley Blvd, Castro Valley, CA 94546
As seen in the photo below, the initial pavement cutting and trenching has been done.
The following locations haven’t begun construction yet.
Walmart
44009 Osgood Rd, Fremont, CA 94539
Lucky Supermarket
35720 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA 94536
Bank Of America
4120 San Pablo Ave, Emeryville, CA 94608
Metro 580
4500 Rosewood Dr, Pleasanton, CA 94588
Lucky Supermarket
1951 Holmes St, Livermore, CA 94550
Contra Costa County
Contra Costa County runs parallel but east of Alameda County. It is somewhat of a “bedroom community” with more of a residential bias. There are large areas of rural land between the larger towns and cities.
Lucky Supermarket
5190 Clayton Rd, Concord, CA 94521
The charging cabinet platform concrete has been poured but no equipment installed yet. It looks like this will be a metro site with three 150 kW charging dispensers and likely a J1772 AC cord.
Magnolia Square Shopping Center
2005 Crow Canyon Pl, San Ramon, CA 94583
This is a metro site with three 50 kW chargering dispensers and a J1772 AC cord.
The following locations haven’t begun construction yet.
Walmart
1021 Arnold Dr, Martinez, CA 94553
Safeway
600 Patterson Blvd, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523
